Description

In 2019, the Department of Health released the implementation of the Equally Well in Victoria – Physical health framework for specialist mental health services.

The Physical health framework describes a range of initiatives for mental health organisations and clinicians to work in partnership with consumers and carers to discuss physical health in the context of a recovery plan. This framework provides information to help mental health services and clinicians to think about how to tailor treatment and strategies to the realities of the daily lives of consumers. Smoking cessation is an important part of the physical health of mental health consumers.

The provision of best practice smoking cessation care ensures people who smoke have increased chance of successfully quitting smoking. Smoking cessation care incorporates brief advice which promotes cessation and connects patients to evidence-based nicotine dependence treatment and better physical health. It is a key part of supporting smokefree health services by ensuring consumers access nicotine withdrawal support and reduce the need to leave wards and smoke on health service grounds.

To support smoking cessation care, Quit has developed Online smoking cessation brief advice training for mental health clinicians

Join us on 30 September for an explanation on the importance of smoking cessation including the perspective from health service and the views from a consumer.
