Description

Working with families caring for someone with a disability, illness or other longer-term condition is both rewarding and challenging. This includes children and adults living with disabilities such as intellectual disability, acquired brain injury, progressive neurological conditions and medical conditions requiring high levels of care. While each family and each care situation is different, there are common family needs. By looking after the family, we maximize positive outcomes for the individual as well as family members. Participants will be introduced to helpful frameworks for understanding and responding to the needs of families living with a disability including the Family Tasks Model which attends to grief mixed with trauma, reconstructing identity, growing through adversity, restructuring roles and responsibilities, and creating new meaning.

This event will cover:

  • To identify four key dimensions of illness and long-term conditions and how they impact family adaptation
  • To understand the impact of illness and longer-term conditions on the individual and family members such as parents, partners, s
  • To practice using the Family Tasks Model as a framework to respond to family needs and promote adaptation and well-being
